BEIJING , Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Using remote sensing, Chinesearchaeologists believe the have located a city of the Protectorateof the Western Regions, a major city on the Silk Road, in KoyukShahri of Luntai County in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

"Thanks to remote sensing, we can start our excavation of theProtectorate of the Western Regions this year ," said Li Wenying, deputy director of the Xinjiang Cultural Relics and ArchaeologyResearch Institute.

The city was established in 60 supervise domestic andforeign affairs around Tarim Basin, protecting the Silk Road frommilitary assaults.

However, due to the devastation of the landscape around thearea, the precise location of the city was not confirmed. Therewere three candidates: Kona Shahri , Koyuk Shahri and Drow Kurt.

Last year, archaeologists from the Institute of Remote Sensingand Digital Earth (RADI) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS) exploited remote sensing technology to find an "abnormal"ring around the Koyuk Shahri, which was later proved to be amoat.

"Based on terrain analysis, the moat can be dated back to 2,200years ago , which conforms to the written records of theProtectorate of the Western Regions," said Nie Yueping, aresearcher from the RADI.

They also found the ancient city site in Koyuk Shahri wasconstructed with the rectangular facade and the round interior.

In terms of the architectural pattern, while the Western HanDynasty cities were preeminently rectangular, cities in westernregions and kingdoms were round. City site in Koyuk Shahri is acombination of the two , different from the other twocandidates.

Archaeologists have restored the original shape of the ancientcity through digitization. Its highest point is six meters abovethe earth, which demonstrates that above the rammed earth, thereused to be a "high-rise building with stairs."

Moreover, the side length of the ancient city wall is roughly230 meters, which matches the Western Han Dynasty standard.

The research program on the Protectorate of the Western Regionsis supported by the Joint Laboratory of Remote Sensing Archaeology(JLRSA) , co-established by the CAS, the State Administration ofCultural Heritage and the Ministry of Education in China.

Besides, the RADI has participated in the searching forYangguan, an important pass on the Silk Road fortified more than2,000 years ago , as well the first Paleolithic cave site found innorthwest China' s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

"The remote sensing technology can adapt to differentlandscapes. We hope that in the future, more mature technology canbe applied to more archaeological work," said Zhu Jianfeng, aresearcher at RADI. Enditem

STOCKHOLM, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- Volvo Trucks would start selling electric medium-duty trucks in Europe in 2019 , the company said Tuesday in a statement.

"Electro mobility is fully in line with Volvo Truck's long term commitment for sustainable urban development and zero emissions," president of Volvo Trucks Claes Nilsson said.

Electric trucks drastically reduce noise and exhaust emissions and open up for new ways to manage logistics. More transport assignments can be carried out at night and fewer trucks need to compete for road space during rush-hour, the company said.

"Our technology and knowhow within electro mobility are based on proven commercial solutions already in use on Volvo's electric buses, and solutions that were introduced in Volvo's hybrid trucks as far back as 2010. The vehicles themselves are only one part of what is needed for large-scale electrification to succeed," said Jonas Odermalm , head of product strategy medium duty vehicles at Volvo Trucks.

"We believe in full electrification for urban distribution as a first step. However, we are working with electrification for other transport applications. This is only the beginning," Nilsson added.

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, March 3 (Xinhua) -- A civilian was killed and three others including a paramilitary trooper were wounded Friday in a grenade blast in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The blast took place in Pulwama town, about 33 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Militants today threw a grenade towards paramilitary troopers here in Murran chowk market," a police official said. "The grenade missed the intended target and exploded with a bang wounding four people including a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) trooper. However, of the wounded one succumbed on way to hospital."

The injured were immediately removed to hospital, locals said.

According to eyewitnesses following the blast they saw people lying on road struggling with pain.

"I was in the marketplace at that time and I heard the blast after that I found some people lying on road with blood oozing from their wounds," Rafiq Ahmad, a local told Xinhua over telephone from Pulwama. "One of the wounded men were unable to walk and he was helped by the bystanders to reach hospital."

Following the attack police and CRPF contingents rushed to the spot to carry out searches aimed at nabbing the attackers.

The attack created panic in the town.

"In a grenade attack today, we lost one civilian," Muneer ul Islam, Deputy Commissioner Pulwama said. "Two civilians and a CRPF trooper also received superficial injuries and are stable."

So far no militant group has claimed responsibility of the blast.

Separatist movement and guerilla war challenging New Delhi's rule is going on in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. Gunfight between militants and Indian troops takes place intermittently across the region.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan is claimed by both in full. Since their Independence from Britain, the two countries have fought.
